ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Blue Hill peninsula resident accused of assaulting his wife last summer was arrested this week on charges of tampering with a witness and violating his bail conditions.

Keovilaisack Sayasane, 44, is accused of trying to harm his wife with a hammer and an ax at their former home on Kingdom Road in Blue Hill. He has been charged with criminal threatening, terrorizing and assault in connection with the July 29, 2010, incident.

According to arrest records at the Hancock County Jail, Sayasane was arrested Aug. 29 on charges of tampering with a witness and violating his bail conditions. Law enforcement officers in Hancock County said the charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in Bangor and directed questions to the Bangor Police Department.

A voice mail message left at the Bangor Police Department early Thursday afternoon was not immediately returned.

Sayasane’s assault trial in July ended in a mistrial after confusion arose over whether the jury might hear testimony about Sayasane’s 1987 manslaughter conviction.

Sayasane’s attorney, Jeffrey Toothaker of Ellsworth, claims prosecutors told the victim, Sayasane’s wife, that Sayasane had killed his previous wife in 1986. The stabbing victim in that case, however, was actually a man. The inaccurate information tainted the wife’s willingness to testify in her husband’s favor, according to the defense attorney.

The Hancock County District Attorney’s Office has argued that the gender of the 1986 stabbing is irrelevant and that there is no need to introduce Sayasane’s manslaughter conviction into testimony about the current assault allegations.

Justice Kevin Cuddy, the trial judge, initially ruled in July in favor of acquittal for Sayasane but then declared a mistrial. Sayasane is appealing that decision to the state supreme court.
