Waterville man arrested after fleeing accident scene

WATERVILLE, Maine — A local man is behind bars Wednesday after crashing his car on West River Road and taking off on foot when he realized police were on their way to the scene.

William Francis, 37, was hunted down by a Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and charged him with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident, police told the Morning Sentinel.

Francis had been driving a 1995 Subaru south on West River Road when the vehicle left the road and clipped a pine tree.

The suspect was bleeding at the scene, was transported by ambulance to Inland Hospital and was later released from custody on $2,000 unsecured bail.

Francis’ first court appearance is Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Waterville District Court.
