Katie Sypher of Orono finishes the cross-country course with her 14-year-old quarter horse mare, Truly’s Ruby, at the beginner novice level in eventing July 20-22 at the United States Pony Club Championships at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Representing the Northeast Region, Katie teamed with three riders from Western New York, Carolina and North Central Prairie regions to place fifth out of 18 teams nationally. Katie and Ruby also completed a dressage test and a stadium jumping course. The team earned ninth place in horse management practices, with only seven penalty points. Katie achieved her Pony Club C-2 rating on Aug. 13, demonstrating horse care, veterinary knowledge, riding skill on the flat and jumping 3-foot stadium and cross-country fences. The USPC was founded in 1954 as a nonprofit youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through formal educational. Pony club competitions are team-based, where members learn the importance of cooperation and teamwork. Katie is a member of Penobscot Pony Club on Miles Road in Newburgh.
