CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — A Canadian truck driver says he feels lucky to be alive after he got stranded between two washed-out bridges in Maine’s Carrabassett Valley at the height of Tropical Storm Irene.
Yannick Livernoche of Weedon, Quebec, was headed north on Route 27 Sunday when he crossed a bridge over the Brackett Brook, but had to stop because of flood waters on the road.
He backed over the bridge and then watched it collapse into the river.
The Kennebec Journal says Livernoche turned around and drove south until he saw that a second bridge had collapsed, leaving him stranded in between, in front of the Sugarloaf Mountain resort.
Livernoche is planning to get a ride home, but his truck will stay where it is until one of the bridges is replaced.
