Music school seeks students

ROCKPORT — Bay Chamber Community Music School is celebrating its first anniversary and is enrolling students for the fall and spring semesters.

The Bay Chamber Community Music School opened a year ago in its newly renovated home on the top floor of the historic Shepherd Building. As demand for new classes and programs has grown, the school is offering several new instruments in the private instruction program. Offerings include percussion, including congas, xylophone and drum kit with John Mehrmann; wind instruments, including saxophone, clarinet and flute with Glen Sargent; and classical guitar with Jeff Rojo.

The school also offers private instruction in violin, viola, cello, piano and voice with professional instructors. Gilda Joffe, Mary Anne Driscoll, Kathryn DerMarderosian, Patricia Stowell, Eliza Jacques-Meyer, Kirsten Monke, Jim Nga and Lydia Forbes are faculty members at Bay Chamber Community Music School.

The Community Music School also offers group instruction in songwriting with Malcolm Brooks, music appreciation with Glenn Jenks and introduction to jazz theory with Glen Sargent, in addition the mainstay program of the music school, Odeon. There are four Odeon Orchestras, Odeon Junior for ages 7 to 14 for a young musician’s first ensemble experience; Odeon Symphony Orchestra open to strings, winds, brass and percussion at the intermediate to advance levels of ability; the Odeon Adult Orchestra, designed for adult players at the intermediate level or above; and the Odeon Chamber Orchestra, open to youth strings players at the high-intermediate to advanced level. All Odeon programs offer musicians a welcoming place to play exciting music, learn ensemble skills and build camaraderie. The music school also offers an ensemble experience for the youngest musicians with the Beginning String Ensemble.
