Prenatal water aerobics
ROCKPORT — If you are searching for a safe, low-impact exercise program you can follow all nine months of your pregnancy, the Penobscot Bay YMCA is offering a new course, the Pre-Natal Water Aerobics class.
Water jogging and aqua aerobics are some of the best exercises to perform while pregnant. Exercising in water is ideal for pregnant women because the water’s buoyancy requires the body to support only 50 percent of its weight. It reduces the risk of stress-related injuries, and the compression of the water is soothing on joints and muscles that are stressed by the added bulk of pregnancy. The water’s temperature also keeps the body from overheating during the workout. The class improves emotional well-being, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strengthening spine stabilization and pre-post childbirth.
Register at the Penobscot Bay YMCA, 116 Union St., or call the Y at 236-3375. Pre-Natal Water Aerobics is offered 8:15-9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the therapy pool. The cost is $30 members, $60 others. Instructor is Andrea Penney. For more information, call Michael Fournier, aquatics director, at 236-3375, ext. 222.
New patient and family space at hospital
ROCKPORT — Pen Bay Medical Center’s celebration of the unveiling of the Bob Gagnon Suite, Pen Bay’s new suite of rooms for hospice, palliative care and cancer care patients, will take place 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the cafeteria.
Three patient rooms have been renovated to look and feel like home, with new flooring, attractive textured fabrics and walls painted in calming colors. Each room contains a comfortable foldout bed so that visiting family members can rest and even spend the night. Included in the Bob Gagnon Suite is a light-filled, welcoming family room overlooking Penobscot Bay.
Many donors made the space possible, including the Gagnon family and friends, Howard Miller, Dr. Hank and Marian White, and Dr. Thomas and Virginia Williams and the Williams family.
The dedication ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. in the Bob Gagnon Suite, followed by refreshments in the Pen Bay Cafe, with remarks by Roy Hitchings, president and CEO of Pen Bay Healthcare. Tours of the suite will be offered throughout the event.
