THOMASTON — The Humane Society of Knox County announced that its 14th annual Fur and Foliage Dog Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Thomaston Academy Building on Route 1. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the 2-mile walk will start at 10:30 a.m.

The society is making it easier to register and raise money for this family event. Not only is the registration fee reduced to $20 and $10 children age 6 to 17, but through the power of First Giving, entrants also now may register online, generate their own fundraising page, make pledges to existing walkers, or create or join a team.

Attendance at the walk is free and open to everyone, but registered walkers who help the shelter raise funds receive a 2011 walk T-shirt and the knowledge that they are helping homeless animals in the community. Walkers also can collect pledges the traditional way by using a pledge form available at or at the shelter facility and register on the day of the event.

In addition to new options for registering and fundraising, this year’s Fur and Foliage is offering more event-day activities, including balloon artists, caricaturists, live music, Santa photos, vendors, agility displays, doggie contests, kids’ activities, food and more.

This year’s top sponsors are Harbor Road Veterinary Hospital and Rockland Animal Hospital. Also sponsoring the event are Machias Savings Bank, Sea Street Graphics, Safe Harbor Confections, Camden National Bank, Brooks

Trap Mill, Maritime Energy and Domino’s Pizza. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information email Tracy at

Since 1991, the society has operated a shelter on Buttermilk Lane in Thomaston. The shelter is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
