ROCKLAND — The Farnsworth Art Museum has a received a $5,000 grant from the Bangor Savings Foundation for its Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists program. The funds from the foundation will go toward the production of a teen-made arts video created by the students of Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists.

Farnsworth Director Christopher J. Brownawell said, “Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists at the Farnsworth provides an invaluable service to midcoast teens. These funds donated by the Bangor Savings Foundation will help us to continue offering free video programming to these students, who have already shown such great promise over the past year.”

“Bangor Savings is a strong supporter of the creative economy,” said Bangor Savings Bank Vice President, Area Sales Manager Skip Bates. “Innovation and creativity are essential skills for a productive community. Teaching our kids about art, film production and at the same time wrestling with difficult issues like teen homelessness is an inspired way for the Farnsworth to fulfill its mission.”

Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists, an after school art program for teens, has been a part of the education department at the Farnsworth Art Museum since 2001. Since its inception, Julia’s

Gallery members have accrued an impressive history of service to middle and high school-age children in the midcoast by organizing two dozen exhibitions of teen art that have displayed more than 1,000 creations to the public in the program’s own stand-alone building on the Farnsworth campus.

In the past 12 months, the students have planned, produced, and premiered two innovative videos, “The Roaring 20s,” a music video shot on a high definition iPhone, and “artWORKS,” a stop-motion, animation video about how the arts play an important role in the lives of young people at risk, which was recently accepted as an entry to the 2011 Camden International Film Festival.
