Arlene graduated from Lubec High School in 1937 and received her registered nurse training at Queen’s Hospital, Portland, in 1940. She married Karl Clark Friel, May 3, 1942, who predeceased her. Nursing was her lifelong vocation. She practiced in a wide range of positions: industrial nurse, camp nurse, home health, long-term care and hospitals. She was an active member of National Right to Life, RSVP, Meals for ME and St. Mary’s Church. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, reading and being of assistance to her neighbors at Ricker Plaza, where she was an original resident. Her children will always remember her most important "job" as being a praying mother.

She is survived by four children, K. Patrick Friel of Stuart, Fla., Maureen Friel of Cary, Kathleen Perez of Kansas City, Mo., and Peggy Robinson of Houlton; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, son, Dennis E. Friel, in April 2011; two brothers, Maurice Foley, in September 2002, and James Foley, in February 2009.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s of the Visitation Church, Houlton, with a reception immediately after. Interment will be at Smyrna Mills Cemetery.
