MILLINOCKET, Maine — Two of the three suspects involved in an armed robbery at the Rite Aid pharmacy on Central Street Monday afternoon were arrested hours later in Chester after an intense search that involved police from several agencies.
Arrested on Class B felony robbery charges were Nicholas Skoby, 29, of Rockport, and Christina Irish, 25, of Millinocket. Both are being held at Penobscot County Jail, Millinocket police Sgt. Jerry Cox said late Monday night. Cox said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
A third suspect, whose name was being withheld, remained on the run as of 11 p.m., Cox said. Police do not believe he is armed.
The 9 mm handgun police believe was used in the holdup has been recovered, Cox said.
The robbery was reported at 4:49 p.m., Cox said. He said the Scoby allegedly entered the pharmacy and left in a vehicle with Irish and the other male.
He said that Penobscot County Deputy Patty McLaughlin stopped the vehicle on Mattamiscontis Road in Chester after a brief pursuit. She arrested Irish at that time, Skoby was located in the nearby woods after he was spotted by a helicopter. He was arrested by state police.
The suspects, who got away by vehicle, were the subject of a search that went well into Monday evening and involved police from several agencies as well as tracking dogs. A U.S. Border patrol helicopter also was requested and was credited with located Skoby, Cox said.
Though few details were available at press time, a Penobscot County emergency dispatcher confirmed that the robbery occurred shortly before 4 p.m. at the Rite-Aid pharmacy on Central Street.
An alert sent to area law enforcement agencies asked police to be on the lookout for a male who robbed the Rite-Aid and left with prescription drugs and cash.
The vehicle reportedly was stopped on the Mattamiscontis Road shortly after 5 p.m. and the two males fled into the woods.
Personnel from the Millinocket and East Millinocket police departments, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, the Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service and U.S. Border Patrol were among those who converged on the area, near the Chester line and Interstate 95. A section of Mattamiscontis Road near the Mattamiscontis Township and Chester line was shut down until about 8:30 p.m.
A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the robbery occurred at the Rite-Aid pharmacy on West Broadway in Lincoln. It actually took place at the Rite-Aid pharmacy on Central Street in Millinocket.
