BANGOR, Maine — A Howland woman was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault Sunday morning after she reportedly hit her child — requiring a hospital visit — while fighting with her boyfriend, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

“This girl was trying to hit the boyfriend and somehow hit the child,” the sergeant said on Monday.

Valerie Rixham, 34, was taken to Penobscot County Jail after her arrest and remained there Monday morning.

Two witnesses at or near a Dowd Road business called police at around 9:05 a.m. Sunday to report a couple fighting. When Officer Steve Jordan stopped the vehicle, he discovered the injured child with “a small cut on the left side of the forehead,” Edwards said.

The couple continued onto Eastern Maine Medical Center while Jordan interviewed eye witnesses on Dowd Road. After finishing his investigation, he found Rixham and arrested her.

“The baby is fine,” Edwards said.

Police did not release the age of the child.

The police report also has been forwarded to the Department of Health and Human Services, he said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
