PROSPECT, Maine — The popular observatory atop the Penobscot Narrows Bridge in Prospect will close at noon Friday and remain closed through Tuesday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. The bridge will remain open to traffic, however.
The Maine Department of Transportation plans to install storm covers over the vented louvers in the observatory to prevent water from seeping into the observatory tower during the storm. The observatory is expected to re-open to visitors at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
The 420-foot-high tower observatory has become a popular tourist destination for those traveling routes 1 and 3 since the observatory opened in 2007.
