Dover-Foxcroft tax rate up 3 percent

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Selectmen on Monday set a tax rate of $15.40 per $1,000 property valuation, a 3 percent increase over the previous year.

Town Manager Jack Clukey said Tuesday that tax bills are expected to be mailed out next week. The first half of the bills will be due Friday, Sept. 30, and the second half will be due Friday, Feb. 24.

Also Monday, a public hearing was held on making a portion of Autumn Avenue one way, but after hearing comments both for and against the move, selectmen decided to table the matter for further study. It is expected that a decision will be made at the board’s Sept. 12 meeting.

Clukey said Autumn Avenue has a very narrow corner and it is difficult for two-way traffic. Some residents want to keep the two-way traffic on the corner because if it changed they would have to enter Harrison Avenue, a busy street when school is in session, according to Clukey.

Selectmen just want to take a little more time and study the traffic patterns, he said.

Selectmen on Monday also elected an 11-member recreation committee.
