It should be an intriguing scene Nov. 13 in Kingston, R.I., where former University of Maine women’s basketball head coach Cindy Blodgett will encounter many of the young women who played for her during her tenure in Orono.

Coach Richard Barron’s Black Bears are scheduled to take on the University of Rhode Island in a nonconference game at the Thomas M. Ryan Center, according to the RhodyWBB Twitter feed.

Blodgett, who was fired March 28 by UMaine athletic director Steve Abbott, is now an assistant coach for coach Cathy Inglese at URI. Inglese formerly was the head coach at Vermont and Boston College.

You can bet UMaine will have an extra challenge against the Rams, since Blodgett will be able to provide in-depth scouting reports on most of the Bears.

And even though Blodgett departed Orono in disfavor with many fans — having coached UMaine to a 24-94 record during her four seasons — don’t be surprised to hear she is greeted warmly by most of her former players when the teams meet in November.

No official word yet, but this could portend a URI return to Orono during 2012-13 or 2013-14.
