WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Capitol-based newspaper has released a list of the 50 richest members of Congress and U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe is on it.

Ranked 31st with estimated assets totaling $9.88 million, Maine’s Repubilcan senior senator is on the list just ahead of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and just behind Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-New York.

The top slot in the Top 50, which was compiled by Roll Call, belonged to Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who is worth $294 million.

None of Maine’s other three representatives cracked the Top 50.

In determining the list, Roll Call added the minimum value of total assets reported by each member of Congress on their annual financial disclosure forms and subtracted the minimum liabilities.

The list is not 100 percent accurate, though, because members are not required to disclose many holdings, including their personal homes or retirement savings accounts.

Snowe, 64, has been a U.S. senator since 1994 and was a House member representing Maine’s 2nd Congressional District from 1978-1994. She is married to former Maine Gov. John McKernan.

Among the Top 50 are 31 Republicans, including Arizona Sen. John McCain, and 19 Democrats, including Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Eighteen of the top 50 were senators; the rest were members of the House of Representatives.

Countries in Africa with iron-fisted dictators have the same wealth distribution as the United States; in other words, a sliver of mega-rich folks are bloated with wealth, and the rest of us are increasingly their peons.

As Warren Buffet recently said, “Stop Coddling the Super Rich”!

Snowe is a longterm beneficiary and supporter of this unjust and vicious system.  Behind her charming facade is a master multimillionaire who knows how to take gullible voters for a ride.

Maybe Warren Buffet needs to lead by example. I believe there is a space on your tax return where you can send in more money. So if Warren feels he is not paying enough, then by all means, send in more.

This is a joke. First, these lawmakers do absolutley nothing for the American people. Regardless of their party affiliation, they just sit around and bow to the major corporations in this country who tell them how to vote. Snowe, Collins…. doesn’t matter. They do not like you. They do not know you. They do not care about you. They are just biding their time until they can retire and move to a tropical climate. Just another joke in the great comedic act of American Politics.

Maybe I got this wrong, but I thought his criticism was not that too few people volunteer to contribute extra money, it’s that the extremely wealthy are not expected to pay the same percentage of the money they make as the rest of us.  I don’t know how his donating money to the government would have any effect on that situation.

Sure she would be rich on her own but most of this wealth likely is tied to not only to her first husbands wealth and position (Which she claimed) but also the Bush tax cuts and the criminal activities of her current husband “Jock”.  Remember him?   He was our “last” (Looks like we’re in for a repeat with LePage) conservative governor who left us in shambles to go to Washington as a lobbiest for the really big bucks.  All was working well for him until just recently.  When folks need money they sometimes even start looking for criminals in their own ranks.  Hard times can hurt everybody huh Jock.  Hope he goes down in flames.  Olympia just please go anywere but back to Washington.

It would be interesting if the BDN would have an investigative reporter track the financial disclosures over the years, and see what we’ve paid the Senator to ‘serve’ us in Congress?   My guess is that her early disclosures showed very modest wealth.

Your point:  giving the rich the option of paying more taxes is best for society rather than actually raising taxes

Counterargument:  The rich are getting richer and the rest of us are struggling or sinking.  Taxes have been lowered on the super-rich for decades, and look where we are at.

Lesson:  When greed takes over, we all lose, except the moguls whose kids ride private jets from mansion to mansion.

I still want to force Snowe and Collins to make a wage of about $35,000 for one year, and live off that for 12 months, without dipping into other funds.  I want them to make an attempt at what many people and families live off of in this state (some more, some less).  Might make them look at some changes for our state if they got to “live the dream” of barely surviving.  When you live in the castle on the mountain, it’s hard to see what the common folk in the valley are doing.

Why don’t everyone pay 100% and then we can wait for Daddy Obama to give us our pittance. And I’m not sure how the GOP has taken more from you. They are not in power. Wait until Obamacare goes fully in to effect. Then watch your taxes/fees go up an dthe country go deeper in debt.

Flat tax. 10% and everyone pays. Everyone.
Too many people have no “skin in the game” and pay nothing…and this includes people making less than $30k a year. I would support you taxing the so called super rich more if you then made the 52% who pay nothing “eat their peas” too.

The real story here is that Snowe has spent the pastt 33 years in Congress which is way to long for any individual. Congress was never meant to be a full-time job or a career for anyone and it’s high time the voters across this county woke up and ended the practice voting people back into office over and over again.

Snowe is worth an estimated $9.88 million and when she finally does leave office she will take with her an incredible pension. Somehow that just doesn’t seem fair!

  • Anonymous

Soooo, the people you are troubled by who make $30k or less have no “skin” in the game because they pay little or no income tax?

These same people  you are so concerned about are paying payroll taxes on 100% of their income, while a person making $1 million a year is paying payroll taxes on less than 11% of his/her income. Is that fair?

You might also be interested to know that the income tax isn’t the only tax that people pay; add up all the taxes (state, local, federal, etc.) paid by the working poor and you will discover that they pay plenty of taxes. And they feel it, because that’s what happens, I suppose, when you live life on the margins and your income goes towards just getting by.  It’s one reason that both dems and repubs have, in the past, voted to give income tax breaks to people with low incomes.

Oh, and many retired folk don’t pay income taxes, either.  Are they getting off too easily as well?

Kerry is wealthy in his own right, even without Theresa. His mother was a Forbes and he is the beneficiary of four trust funds from the Forbes Foundation. He was raised upper middle class but had a doting grandmother (Forbes) that sent him to the best European schools. His wealth was inherited from his mother’s family.

He was also a district attorney from 1976-1979 and won convictions in several high profile trials before turning to politics. You actually get paid to be a senator (much to our chagrin) and it is a job, so to say he has never earned a dime gets a “pants-on-fire” from the truth-o-meter.

Both parties have been taking from all of us for years and years.  However, it has always been clear and continues to be even clearer today that the Republican party only cares about themselves, the rich and corporations.  In the past, there have been politicians who cared about all Americans, and they were influential in ensuring that all Americans received mostly equal consideration.  Now, our businesses are overseas receiving tax benefits from us and don’t care one bit about us.  And, the Republicans are protecting them and their interests.  And, Olympia Snowe is one of those Republicans.

People have an incorrect perception of taxes upon the rich. If we earned money through investments, we would also pay less on those returns than we do on our income though our jobs. I have favored a flat tax for decades. By flat tax, I mean that every earner pays the same percentage of their income with no loopholes, no deductions, no tax credits.  There are those who may earn 30,000 and actually get more money back than they pay in thanks to tax credits. Rather than sitting around whining about the rich, some people ought to go out there and figure out how to earn that kind of money. Some of those making the most are on call 24/7/365. As citizens paying for everyone else dipping into the government pot that we fill, we should be clamoring for a FLAT TAX. The VAT tax would not be beneficial to everyone, but with a flat tax, no one could complain that they are treated unfairly.

Agreed… but there was never an issue about ending the Bush tax cuts for the average citizen… most working people do benefit a little from the tax cuts.  There was an issue about extending those tax cuts to those who do not need it.   The reason provided was that they needed this reassurance in order to begin restoring some of the millions of jobs they cut.  Well, that didn’t happen.  They just took their tax breaks and continue hiring overseas or buying parts for all things American made overseas because it’s cheaper.  The truth is, it IS cheaper in every way.  This situation has created a significant imbalance between Americans which is headed toward the extinction of the middle class. The middle class is the soul of our economy.  Poor can’t buy anything and the rich buy Ferraris, Mercedes, Bensons, Porsche, only the finest linens from Ireland, the best clothes Paris can produce… a lot of good that does for the economy of the United States of America.

As far as I’m concerned all the politicians in Washington have a hand in the destruction of the United States of America because it’s politics before people and that means money and greed are going drive this country right into the ground.  We’re headed there now… the dollar keeps losing value, our “American made” product use parts from China and Indonesia, our wealthy buy imports like Ferrari’s, Bensons, fine linens from Ireland, the newest fashions from Paris, etc… The middle class is going extinct and when it does the United States of America is destroyed. The poor don’t buy, the rich buy abroad… the middle class doesn’t exist.  Where then is the United States of America? Destroyed at the hands of all the politicians in Washington – each and every one of them has the ability to make a difference. That’s why we elect them and send them there — to represent us, not their own best interests.  That hasn’t happened in a long, long time and Obama is certainly guilty of rolling over just as the rest of them are guilty for looking out for their own self-interests.

So, no where in this article does it say how she came to be so rich.  Was it inherited? from savvy investments?  Inventions?   Or was it just plain old hard work?  I’d like to know.  Otherwise should we assume she got it because of her political connections?  Like, oh, let me see . . . Assad, or Mubarak, or Gaddafi?

The first  dozen or so comments I read all seemed to be about whether the “rich” pay enough in taxes.  Was that intentional misdirection?    The real question is:  Who can better afford to pay off the mountain of debt that belongs to ALL of us?

And the million dollar question:  How come our elected representatives keep getting richer while the vast majority of us keep getting poorer?

I’d ask you to back-up your assertion, but I know for a fact that you can not, because it’s false, though frequently repeated by the tea party and republicans.

People earning under 30k a year don’t pay any taxes ?  Really ?

Though the statement refers to federal income taxes, it is not accurate anyway. The reality is that in 2010, 47% of people who filed a tax return did not owe any federal taxes. These hard working Americans did not owe federal tax because of the many tax credit programs, and because most people overpay their federal taxes when they work and get a refund, and because more people were on disabiilty and social security income and did not pay federal tax.Yet another example of who is really out to rip you off, Republicans would have you believe that the money you’ve overpaid in taxes that comes out of your paycheck don’t count.  Now tell me, who’s really doing the big money grab when they repeat this lie about the percentage of Americans that pay taxes ?

  • AionNV

Back up your assertions with something tangible, these are just your facile opinions.

Funny how you worship the rich, so long as they are Republican.

So “fighting back” makes us look sad. If you look at the wealth in the country, it is increasingly in the hands of fewer and fewer people. The rich suffered some between 2007 and 2009, but how about the author includes the general trend during that financial calamity which followed eight years of Bush/Cheney. I don’t think Halliburton was hurting during that period.

At least we don’t need to worry about “special interests” bribing her.  Elect someone new, and we’ll have to go through the whole “down payment” thing again.

I find this a heart-warming story of a woman with very little money, being elected to the Senate, and then in 18 short years, at a yearly salary of 130-180 thousand, she has managed to build her wealth to almost ten million. It’s inspirational.

“None of Maine’s other three representatives cracked the Top 50″.
Are you serious? What about Chellie Pingree-Sussman? Last time I looked, she flies on a $25 million, 19 seat jetliner and cruises aboard a new $25 million yacht. The Sussman’s home in North Haven was reportedly valued at $12 million as well.
    You’d better re-check that list!

Governor McKernan and Senator Snowe are successful people – and your using them as some kind of class-warfare examples falls on deaf ears at my house!  These Republicans value hard work, investments and creating jobs – and they’ve been good at it.  And they’ve been at it a long time too.
Please contrast this with Chellie Pingree and Donald Sussman – who promote higher taxes, more government spending and fund every campaign for every nutty thing on the liberal agenda… yet  live a billionaire’s lifestyle that would make Mick Jagger blush!

“None of Maine’s other three representatives cracked
the Top 50″ Somehow the reporter either is woefully uninformed about our
representatives or willfully chose to ignore the fact that Rep. Chellie Pingree
Sussman is married to one of the wealthiest men in America.  She therefore owns a plane worth $24 million
plus a multi-million dollar yacht among other plentiful holdings.  Somehow this article portrayed the good
Senator as some sort of evil person for having married a very hard-working man
    who has, by virtue of that hard work become a success.  I always thought that was the American dream.;
something to aspire to and work for.

Your article states that Governor McKernan and Senator Snowe have a reported net worth of some $9.88 million.  But didn’t I read that the Pingree-Sussmans of North Haven took delivery of a $22 million YACHT this summer?  Last time I looked, $23 million is a lot more than $9.88 million.  And that’s just the boat!  What about the homes in Connecticut, Washington, Portland, New York and the multiple properties in the Virgin Islands???  What about the jet – that costs as much to fly for a couple hours as the average Maine family makes in a YEAR?
Better be like Santa and check that list twice, because you left somebody off.

Do you suppose  Mike Michaud made his millions working ten short years for Great Northern Paper? I am sure he has made a few dollars in Government.  I do not agree 100% with all of Senator Snowe’s ideas however, I would rather have her working for Maine vs. another Pingree or Michaud. I feel that there is too many kick backs on both sides of the aisle. The mess  in Washington started twenty plus years ago and I feel we need a clean slate and new beginning with new representation of the people. Knowing that this will never happen we need to support moderates and republicans that will work  for our interests. We need to stop special interest groups that fund the democratic agenda. I support Senator Snow.

How inconvenient to Chellie Pingree’s liberal base that you use your big Weekend Edition to expose the richest people in Congress.
How uncomfortable she must feel, being a billionaire now, but still insisting on higher taxes for the rich!
How strange that a Progressive Caucus class-envy warrior is the wealthiest person in Congress.
Oh, wait a minute.  After further review, she’s not on the list.  What?  She’s NOT on the list?

Do you suppose Mike Michaud earned his millions working a short 10 years at Great Northern? I am sure he’s made alot of money in Washington. Though I do not agree 100% with Senator Snowe I feel that special interest groups  and union  influences sway our Democratic  representatives. I do support Senator Snowe and her moderate ideas. So what if she is worth millions let’s give Obama three more years and trillions of dollars to try to buy us out of this mess. I am sure Senator Snowe’s assets and worth are auditable.  How about Americas?  We need more republican and moderate ideas in Washington to represent us. President Obama, I feel is not a good leader and as commander in chief, he does not lead by example.

So true…I beleive Senator Snowe to be a humble, hard working and caring woman. She has had many years to accumulate her wealth. Let us take a look at her life…single for many years and no children…maybe life insurance proceeds and good investment decisions. I truly don’t beleive her wealth came from kickbacks or bribes for votes. Senator Snow votes across party lines with her constinuents best interests at heart.

No wonder she doesn’t have a clue or care a wit about most of the people she represents. Her voting record is always party line, and represents only the top 1 or 2 %, just like her. Free pass on the backs of the workers.

What’s this I hear about the Sussman’s new yacht being custom-built in South Africa?  It is a $23 million toy that COULD have been built by Maine boatbuilders.   Why wasn’t it?  (And how many jobs would a project like THAT create in Maine, by the way?)
Adding insult to injury to a slam in the pocketbook… I also hear the boat is registered in the Virgin Islands.  True???   Have you sent a reporter to check on this?  If so, how mush excise tax does the State of Maine “lose” by not registering the Titanic of North Haven here in Maine?
All of which begs the question: WHY was Chellie Pingree-Sussman left off your list of the Top Fifty richest members of Congress?  If the richest now is “only” worth $293 million… wouldn’t that make the yacht-sailing, jet-riding Pingree-Sussman the #1 richest – by far???

The article didn’t mention Mike Michaud.  Maybe he is worth millions but the article doesn’t say that.  Were you thinking of Mitch McConnell?  Same initials, so I can see the confusion.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SCNJPPZDX7GEYELESV2YGQFLN4 Pat T. Riot

Isn’t it ironic?  Conservatives defend lower taxes for America’s wealthiest citizens and Democratic and fairly liberal Chellie Pingree is one of those very wealthy people, someone whom conservatives must dislike.
