SEARSPORT, Maine — The worker who died Thursday when a dump truck backed into him on Route 1 in Searsport has been identified as Weston B. Haskell III, 58, of Frankfort.
Haskell was working on a water utility project at about 4 p.m. near the intersection of Route 1 and Kidder Point Road when the truck driven by an employee of RF Jordan Construction of Ellsworth backed into him, killing him instantly.
According to Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye, Haskell was employed by AE Hodson, an engineering company based in Waterville.
The accident remains under investigation by the Searsport police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the federal agency that investigates workplace injuries and deaths. An OSHA official said Friday afternoon that the investigation should take no longer than 180 days.
Motorists along that stretch of Route 1 were rerouted around the accident site for several hours, LaHaye said. The road reopened to regular traffic shortly before 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Waldo County deputies and the Maine State Police’s commercial vehicle enforcement unit assisted at the scene.
