Machias motorcyclist injured in crash on Route 1

WHITING, Maine — A motorcyclist from Machias was injured Thursday morning when he hit a pothole and lost control of his 1986 Yamaha FZX 700.

Nathan Vieland, 25, dislocated his shoulder and suffered extensive abrasions, also called road rash, in the 11:45 a.m. accident, according to Washington County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Ralph Pineo.

Vieland was traveling south on Route 1, near Gardner’s Lake Road, when the crash occurred.

Pineo said Vieland struck a pothole and the front end of the bike “went out from under him and he laid it down.” Pineo said Vieland was not wearing any leather protective gear but was wearing a helmet. No other vehicles were involved and Vieland’s motorcycle was demolished. The incident did not happen in the road reconstruction area in Whiting, Pineo said.

The deputy praised two men — Rick Beal and Eric Holm, both of Machias — for rendering first aid to Vieland until the Machias Ambulance Service arrived. Pineo said Vieland was treated for his injuries at Down East Community Hospital and later released.
