State police make third arrest in Aroostook County burglaries, ATV thefts

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Maine State Police have made a third arrest in connection with the theft of ATVs from a Stockholm religious retreat and a string of burglaries from Stockholm to Mars Hill.

Daniel Chabot, 21, of Presque Isle was arrested Monday as the result of an investigation that began earlier this month when police received reports of suspicious activity at Brigade, a Christian camp in Stockholm, Sgt. Tom Pelletier said Wednesday in a news release.

Chabot has been charged with Class C felony burglary as well as criminal mischief and unauthorized use of property, Pelletier said.

Clayton Michaud, 19, of Crystal and Jay Whitmore, 19, whose hometown was not provided, both were arrested on burglary charges last week after state police reportedly determined they had burglarized the Stockholm retreat. A stolen ATV and a stolen utility vehicle were recovered at the time of their arrests.

On Aug. 9, state police went to Brigade after learning that an ATV may have been stolen and that other suspicious activity had taken place. When they arrived, Pelletier and Trooper Dan Marquis recovered a 2009 Yamaha Rhino utility vehicle hidden behind buildings at the facility. Further investigation indicated that someone had burglarized the main building and had been staying inside it for some time, Pelletier said.

He said several other items from a burglary that had occurred in Mars Hill sometime earlier in the week also were recovered. Police concluded that the three suspects had used the Rhino to travel to Mars Hill to burglarize three buildings at the Big Rock Ski property, where they allegedly took a 2002 Honda Foreman ATV.

Presque Isle police helped locate Chabot, Pelletier said. Trooper Fred Thomas is the primary investigator in the Big Rock cases. Marquis is leading the Stockholm investigation.
