Two million or so people visit Acadia National Park each year for a variety of reasons.

For the past few years, my daughter, Becky, 16, and I have been among them. Most people go to see Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Cadillac Mountain. We enjoy all of those places, but we also like to explore some of the 125 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage road open for hiking.

We usually take the Island Explorer bus to Sand Beach and lounge in the sun for a while, then hike to Thunder Hole. The trail is very level and the views are phenomenal. Last year, we decided to venture further along the trail, which, for the more ambitious, continues all the way to Otter Cliff and beyond to Otter Point.

We both love to take pictures. With ocean surf to the left and beautiful moss-covered stones and forest to the right, it is hard to know where to look and what to take pictures of along this trail.

Be sure to peek down into every little cove and to carefully step out onto the cliffs any time there’s safe access. I spotted an interesting rock formation (pictured) along the Otter Cliff Trail. Views from Otter Cliff are excellent, as long as you don’t mind heights too much.

Becky was nervous heading up, but then I couldn’t get her to stop taking pictures and head back down.
