Defense in bottle redemption trial says couple was unaware

ALFRED, Maine — Lawyers for the former owners of bottle redemption center in Maine say their clients didn’t know the bottles and cans they’re charged with accepting weren’t bought in Maine.

In a trial that opened Tuesday in York County Superior Court, Thomas and Megan Woodard are being tried on charges they received more than $10,000 from Maine beverage distributors for returning bottles and cans that were purchased — without deposits — in other states.

The couple formerly owned Green Bee Redemption in Kittery.

The Portland Press Herald said Assistant Attorney General Leanne Robbin told jurors the couple knowingly schemed to get handling fees of 3 to 3.5 cents per container from Maine distributors.
