BREWER, Maine — Police are looking for a man who threatened an employee at the Big Apple convenience store on South Main Street early Wednesday and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said.

“The robbery involved the threatened use of force,” he said Wednesday afternoon. “It is unknown if the suspect actually had a weapon. The witnesses believed that he did.”

Police were called to the gas station and convenience store at about 2:10 a.m. and are looking for a clean-shaven, thin black man who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 140-150 pounds, the police captain said.

He was last seen wearing bluejeans, a blue or black hooded sweatshirt and a hat.

Moffitt said police do not have surveillance images of the robbery. A composite drawing of the robber was not done because his face was covered, Police Chief Perry Antone said.

Police are not disclosing the amount of cash stolen.

The clerk told police the robber left the store on foot, walking toward the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge.

A canine tracking unit was called in. “It’s possible the suspect went to Bangor, but that is not confirmed at this point,” Moffitt said.

The police dog lost the trail it was following in downtown Bangor, he said. Bangor police assisted Brewer in searching for the robber, checking the bridges and other areas, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Wednesday.

There were no customers in the small store at the time of the robbery, and police are following up on a couple of leads, Moffitt said.

“No one was injured,” said a store clerk who answered the phone Wednesday morning.

Investigators believe that the robber scoped out the store before committing the crime, Moffitt said.

Those with information about the crime or who saw someone matching the man’s description around the store early Wednesday may call the Brewer Police Department at 989-7001. Detective Paul Gauvin is handling the investigation.
