Fourteen students from Maine Traditional Karate Dojo in Orrington, including three brown belts, traveled recently to Dover, N.H., to train with Grand Master Fusei Kise, head of the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kodubo. This is one of the oldest Okinawan styles to be formally organized into a ryu, or system to be handed down, dating back to the early 1800s. Participants at MTKD not only train in the physical aspects of Shorin-Ryu, but also study the history and origins of the art. From left are sempai Jody Layman, sempai Candice Kiefer, sempai Scott Daigle, sensei Steve Apsega and sempai Craig Nichols.
