Hermon’s Petersen sets state youth record in 100 meters


James Petersen of Hermon established a state record Saturday while competing in the Maine Junior Olympic State Championship track and field meet at Cony High School in Augusta.

Petersen, running in the Midget boys (age 11) division, won the 100 meters with a time of 13.47 seconds. It was one of three victories on the day for Petersen, who also won the 200 in 28.28 seconds and the 400 in 1:03.68.

Petersen was one of several youngsters from northern Maine who excelled in the meet.

Cayden Spencer-Thompson of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation team, also competing in the Midget boys division, won two events Saturday. He claimed the long jump with a leap of 14 feet even and took the triple jump with a 33-4 effort.

In the Midget girls (age 11) bracket, McKenna Smith of the Old Town Track Club also won the long and triple jumps with performances of 13-3 3/4 and 29-5 1/4, respectively. Becky Anido-Lopez of the Red Riot Track Club (Orono) picked up victories on the track, claiming Midget girls (age 12) titles in the 800 meters (2:39.91) and 1,500 meters (5:36.18).

Bangor produced two double-event winners, both in the Youth boys (age 14) division. Nicholas Gilpin sprinted to victory in the 100 (12.48) and 400 (55.26), while Colin Glencross captured first-place finishes in the 1,500 (5:06.30) and 3,000 (10:43.12).

Other event winners included three from the Old Town Track Club. Emma Hargreaves won the Bantam girls (age 10) long jump (11-0 1/2), Eliza McPhee took the Mite girls (age 8) long jump (8-5) and Morgan Paradis came out on top in the Bantam girls (age 10) javelin (60-1).

Gabriel Coffey of Bangor won the Bantam boys (age 10) 400-meter run (1:12.66) and Anna Bryan of Brewer captured the Youth girls (age 14) javelin (94-0)

Relay crowns were claimed by the Central (Corinth) 4×100-meter Mite boys (age 8) squad, made up of Cayman Zephir, Liam Velgouse, Bryce Burns and Jackson Kenney, that was clocked in 1:13.36 and Red Riot Track Club quartet of Holly LaBrecque, Lily Koffman, Alli Pickering and Diana Tyutyunnyk in the Youth girls (age 14) 4×400 (4:42.77).
