Nelson paces Texas past Italy in SLWS play

BANGOR — Braden Nelson scored twice, drove in two runs, stole two bases and pitched 3⅔ innings of scoreless relief as the Rose Capital East Little League of Tyler, Texas, defeated Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, 11-2 in an opening-day game at the Senior League World Series on Sunday at Mansfield Stadium.

The U.S. Southwest champions from Texas East, making their first SLWS appearance since 2007, are idle Monday before returning to action at 10 a.m. Tuesday against Talbot County, Md.

The Europe-Middle East-Africa champion from Italy, making its second trip to the SLWS in three years, is scheduled to play Maine District 3 champion Brewer at 5 p.m. Monday.

The EMEA champion reached Texas starter Cade Suggs for two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Italy was held to just three hits the rest of the way.

Nelson relieved Suggs in the third inning and allowed two hits while striking out five batters and walking one before Seth Gibson worked a scoreless seventh inning for the winners.

The U.S. Southwest champs were limited to one run over three innings by EMEA starter Simone Bazzadini, who struck out five batters and walked eight but had to leave the game after approaching the 95-pitch single-game limit.

The Texans when touched up the Italians’ bullpen for four-run rallies in both the fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.

Trace Reed doubled and tripled, stole three bases and scored two runs for the winners, while Mason Mallard singled twice with two RBIs. Gibson added a double, a sacrifice fly and two stolen bases, and Jacob Spitzer doubled.

The Texans stole nine bases in the game and were issued 13 walks by EMEA pitchers..

Alessandro Tonzar had three singles while Daniele Furlan and Davide Bertoldi each singled twice to account for Italy’s seven hits.
