ROCKLAND, Maine — A local man who accidentally accelerated into the Rockland Ferry Terminal Friday with his Saab station wagon caused significant damage to the building and also a minor injury.
Ebenezer Gay, 85, of Rockland, told police that he was unsure exactly how the acceleration happened. But at about noon Friday his car jumped forward, crushing two newspaper vending machines against the terminal’s exterior wall with enough force to rip open a hole in it.
A woman who had been in the restroom on the other side of the wall received a minor injury when her foot was caught, according to Sgt. Don Finnegan of the Rockland Police Department.
Although there was a “great big gaping hole” in the terminal, Finnegan said that Gay’s car did not appear to have much damage other than a cracked grille in front.
Neither Gay nor his wife, who was traveling as his passenger, were hurt in the crash.
