BAR HARBOR, Maine — Allied Whale, the marine mammal research program at College of the Atlantic, has received funds from two granting agencies to support both its research and its work in responding to stranded and endangered marine mammals through the Marine Mammal Stranding Response Program.

The John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program has awarded Allied Whale $100,000 in support of stranding response operations. A second grant from the Cestone Foundation provides $15,000 of matching funds.

“This is the eleventh consecutive such award for the college from the Prescott Program,” said Sean Todd, director of Allied Whale and the stranding response program. “The annual application process is competitive and peer reviewed, so our continued success in this field is both a testament to the excellent stranding response team we have in place at the college, as well as the national network’s faith and trust in our operations here in Down East Maine.”

Todd currently holds COA’s Steven K. Katona Chair of Marine Sciences.

Allied Whale is part of a small group of institutions — including Maine’s Department of Marine Resources and the University of New England — responding to marine strandings in Maine, as well as a member of the national marine mammal response network mediated by the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration.

The program is responsible for all live and dead marine mammals and sea turtles that are stranded from Rockland to the Canadian border.

Beyond funding the stranding coordinator and a part-time stranding technician, the grant covers essential veterinary services, ongoing training in diagnostic and clinical techniques and public outreach.

To report a stranding along Maine’s coastline, call Maine’s marine animal stranding hot line, 800-532-9551, or the local hot line, 266-1326.
