Laura Martel, the only University of Maine women’s soccer player ever to be named the America East Striker of the Year (2009), has replaced Mark Hundhammer as Husson University’s assistant women’s soccer coach.

“I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get going,” said the 23-year-old Martel, who graduated from Maine with a degree in physical education in 2010 and spent the last year as a nanny for two children. “It’s a great fit for me. And it came at a perfect time.”

Lewiston native Martel said she had been looking for a coaching job and was contacted by former University of Maine women’s assistant Jackie Gebhart about the Husson position.

Husson University head coach Keith Bosley said he had called Gebhart to ask her if she knew of anyone available who would make a quality assistant and Gebhart suggested Martel.

“Jackie’s recommendation meant a great deal to me,” said Bosley, who is happy to have Martel on board.

“Laura was able to compete at the Division I level and do it very successfully so she knows what (success) is supposed to look like,” said Bosley. “I think she will help us reach another level. She can show our players what the next level looks like.”

Martel will work with the goalies and strikers and she will also serve as the recruiting coordinator, according to Bosley.

“She can certainly help us recruit in southern Maine where she comes from and where she played her club soccer growing up,” said Bosley. “She will bring a certain respect with her when she talks to high school players. She might even be able to relate to them better than I can.”

Martel scored an America East-leading 13 goals her senior year.

“This is going to be a great opportunity for me. I’m seen some of the (Husson) girls play so I’m not totally out of the loop here,” said Martel. “Coaching is what I really want to do.”

She has already met some of the Husson players and said they were “a very welcoming bunch.”

Martel is still looking for a full-time job, she said.

Perry enjoys solid summer season

Hampden Academy grad Brennan Perry recently turned in a solid season with the Glen Falls Golden Eagles of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, formerly the New York Collegiate Baseball League.

The lefthanded Perry finished with a 5-2 record, including a win over the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at Abner Doubleday Field. He helped lead the Golden Eagles to a first-place finish in the East Division before they lost in the league semifinals.

Perry, who is entering his junior year at the University of Southern Maine, finished with a 5.16 ERA, struck out 35, and walked 24 while opponents had a .236 batting average against him.
