STOCKHOLM, Maine — State police have arrested two men in connection with the theft of two all-terrain vehicles from Mars Hill and Stockholm.

Maine State Police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said Thursday that troopers responded to the Brigade, a Christian retreat camp in Stockholm, on Aug. 9, after receiving a call there was possibly a stolen ATV on the property and that suspicious activity had taken place there.

Pelletier and Trooper Dan Marquis arrived at the scene and recovered a 2009 Yamaha Rhino hidden behind buildings. Further investigation found that someone had burglarized the main building and had been staying inside for some time. The investigators also recovered various other articles there that had reportedly been taken during a burglary earlier in the week in Mars Hill.

Clayton Michaud, 19, of Crystal and Jay Whitmore, 19, later were apprehended leaving the area. Whitmore told police he was from North Carolina but has ties to the Caribou area.

They were reportedly riding a 2002 Honda Foreman that was stolen last weekend from the Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill.

The 2009 Yamaha Rhino recovered by investigators belonged to a Stockholm woman and was stolen from the parking lot of a Stockholm restaurant on Aug. 6. The ATV is valued at $13,000 and sustained extensive damage during the time it was missing, according to Pelletier.

The two men were arrested and charged with felony burglary, theft by receiving stolen property and aggravated criminal mischief. Whitmore also was held on a probation violation and Michaud had an active arrest warrant out for failing to appear.

The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending, Pelletier said.
