WEST SIMSBURY, Conn. – Andrew Maynard "Mike" Yakemore, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at home. Andrew was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Bangor.
He lived on a small farm in central Maine attending a one-room schoolhouse with nine grades. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Prior to starting his own business of real estate development in 1975, he was employed in the aerospace industry and companies including Eastman Kodak and Raytheon. He was a resident of West Simsbury, Conn., since 1966 and most recently River Ridge at Avon, Conn.
He was predeceased by his wife, a loving and caring partner for 60 years, Edith Arvene. They were together in first grade and then again in high school. He was also predeceased by a 16-year-old son, Jeffrey, in 1974. Survivors are son, Michael L. Yakemore; daughter, Jeanine L. Christensen and her husband, Nord E. Christensen, all of Simsbury, Conn., and three grandchildren, Lisa A. Mayer and her husband, Ryan, of Lebanon, Ohio, Ashley R. Decker and her husband, Chad, of Bear, Del., and Ryan A. Christensen of Salem, Mass. Mike never forgot his "roots" or the many blessings along the way. He would like to be remembered for his conversation, the need to recycle and the pleasure of helping others less fortunate.
There will be no calling hours. A service for the celebration of Mike’s life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, Conn. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Simsbury Cemetery.
