PORTLAND, Maine — Because of the city’s dense population, a Portland City Council committee is advising that sales and use of fireworks be prohibited in the city.
Fire Chief Fred LaMontagne told the Portland Press Herald, “We really have grave concerns around a fire starting, as well as personal injuries.”
In June, Legislature and Gov. Paul LePage passed a law effective Jan. 1 allowing the sale and possession of most commercial fireworks in Maine.
A City Council vote on ban recommendation is expected in September.
