Ironman Athlete

Jay Fonseca (left) of Bangor, shown with wife Kate, was one of 3,000 athletes participating in the 2011 Ford Ironman Triathlon on July 24 in Lake Placid, N.Y. The event consisted of a 2.4-mile swim in Mirror Lake; a 112-mile bike ride along state, county and local roads; and a 26.2-mile run passing through the downtown area four times. Crossing the finish line at Lake Placid's Speed Skating Oval in his first Ironman, No. 984 finished with a total time of 15 hours 44 minutes 44 seconds. Jay is the son of Sheila and Bert Fonseca of Enfield, Conn., and works as a flight nurse for LifeFlight of Maine.
