East Machias man indicted by grand jury in use of counterfeit money

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

ELLSWORTH, Maine — An East Machias man accused of using fake $50 bills at Walmart stores in Ellsworth, Bangor and Calais is one of 19 people indicted this month by a Hancock County grand jury.

According to local police, Lawrence M. Cormier, 40, used fake bills at the Calais store on Sunday, Jan. 9, of this year and at the Bangor and Ellsworth stores the following day. In all, he is accused of passing six fake $50 bills at the three stores.

The bills were printed in high detail on both sides but had identical serial numbers and incidental pen marks, police have said.

By Tuesday, Jan. 11, Walmart staffers in Ellsworth realized someone had used counterfeit money at their store and had identified Cormier on a store surveillance tape when Cormier was spotted in the store by a security officer, according to police. Cormier and his companion were detained and, after being questioned by police, Cormier confessed to knowingly using the counterfeit bills at the Ellsworth store, Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page said on Jan. 11.

During the interview, police learned a man resembling Cormier also had passed fake bills at the Bangor and Calais stores, according to Page. Cormier then admitted to police to passing fake bills at those stores, too, Page has said. Cormier refused to tell police how or where he got the fake money, police said.

Cormier’s companion has not been charged in the case. Cormier was indicted Aug. 4 on charges of aggravated forgery and theft.
