PORTLAND, Maine — Pine Tree Legal Assistance, a nonprofit law firm that focuses its efforts on low-income families, has received a $24,000 grant to help it better explain the legal interests and needs of Maine veterans and their families.

The firm won a 2009 national competition to develop the first clearinghouse website for military and veteran families with legal questions, www.statesidelegal.org. The website provides “high school reading level” advice and information, according to Pine Tree Legal.

The Maine Community Foundation grant will help Pine Tree Legal create new, simple, clear explanations of Maine laws that relate to military families, according to a press release.

“This funding will improve veterans’ access to legal protections and enable Pine Tree Legal to better advocate for veterans and military families with these legal challenges,” said Pine Tree Executive Director Nan Heald.

The website avoids legal jargon and tries to provide information to direct families to resources that will help them answer their legal questions, according to the press release.
