ELLSWORTH – Carlton "Bud" Bernard Beckmann, 82, died Aug. 2, 2011, at an Ellsworth health care facility. He was born June 17, 1929, in Elgin, Ill., son of Carl Joseph and Helen Caroline (Conro) Beckmann.

Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and served 15 years as an enlisted seaman in cryptology and 10 years as a commissioned officer. During his career he received several awards, but most of all he was proud and cherished his joint service commendation for his work with all branches of the service and civil service at NSA – National Security Agency. He and his wife were stationed at many statewide and overseas facilities. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1973. Bud and Jean both became underwriters for Franklin Life Insurance. They spent many summers at their cottage at Shady Nook, Trenton, before moving here permanently upon retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an excellent gardener. He was a member of Eastern Star, and Irene Chapter Order of Eastern Star, where he served as worthy grand patron in 2000. Bud also held the title of honorary grandfather of Assembly No. 9 Order of the Rainbow for Girls, Ellsworth. He was also a member of Lygonia Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 40, Navy Corps Veteran Association, Military Officers Association, Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9 of Ellsworth and American Legion Hancock Post No. 207.

He is survived by his wife, Jean B. (March) Beckmann of Ellsworth; son, Donald C. Beckmann of Sullivan; daughters, Carla J. Perrott and husband, David, of Parkton, Md., Jeanne L. Milano and husband, Raymond, of Weymouth, Mass., and Judith A. MacLean and husband, Jonathan, of Windham, N.H.; four grandsons, Ryan, Matthew and Brady Perrott and Jonathan MacLean; one granddaughter, Lauren MacLean; sisters, Rosemary Ehrler of Portland, Ore., Caroline Bidelman of Bradenton, Fla., Doris Campion of Tigard, Ore., and Donna Chapman of Crystal Lake, Ill.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Beckmann and Charlotte Wiese.

Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a Masonic service 6:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home, including an Order of Eastern Star service. A graveside committal with full military honors will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
