BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested Monday after he allegedly opened two packages of ear buds he had not paid for at a Bangor department store.

Michael Ralston, 26, was charged with attempted theft, criminal mischief and violating bail convictions from a prior arrest, Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber said Monday night, citing an arrest report.

The incident that led to Ralston’s arrest happened about 11 a.m. at Target, when he opened two packages of earphones, damaging the packaging, and then returned them to their display area, Weber said.

“They couldn’t be resold,” Weber said. He said the items were valued at $135 combined.
