OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — An Old Orchard Beach bar and nightclub has been destroyed by a large fire, the smoke from which could be seen more than a mile away.

Firefighters from several towns were called before 9 a.m. Monday to The Galaxy, a two-story building on East Grand Avenue not far from the Old Orchard Beach pier. Hundreds of tourists watched as firefighters on ladder trucks doused the fire throughout the morning.

There were no reported injuries, and no immediate word from fire officials on the cause.

Strong onshore winds created smoky conditions in the town’s downtown area.
