Unity credit union robber still at large

UNITY, Maine — Police are still searching for the man who robbed the Down East Credit Union branch on School Street Friday afternoon and walked away with an undisclosed amount of cash, Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story said Monday.

“We are following up on some leads we’ve gotten,” the sheriff said, referring to video surveillance images taken at the scene.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department released images shortly after the robbery that show a bearded man wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with the word “Montana” and the number 89 on the front. He also was wearing jeans, white footwear, most likely sneakers, sunglasses and possibly gloves.

He is described as a 5-foot-6-inch-tall white male weighing about 140 pounds.

The man entered the credit union at about 2:30 p.m. Friday with a black bag, held it over the counter and demanded cash. He was last was seen heading toward Unity Raceway.

It was not clear whether the robber was armed.

In addition to Maine State Police, who assisted with a scent-tracking dog, Waldo County deputies have received assistance from the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone with information about the robber or the robbery is urged to call the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department at 338-2040. Detective Matt Curtis is the lead investigator.
