Police continue search for Unity credit union robber

By Dawn Gagnon and Heather Steeves, BDN staff

UNITY, Maine — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police are still searching for a man who held up the Down East Credit Union branch on School Street.

A man entered the credit union Friday afternoon with a black bag, held it over the counter and demanded cash.

The man, who left on foot, got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story said.

The robber last was seen heading toward Unity Raceway. Though a state police tracking dog team was brought to the area to help find him, he remained at large Sunday.

The robber is described as a white male about 5 feet 6 inches and about 140 pounds in weight. He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with the word “Montana”and the number 89 on the front. He also was wearing bluejeans, white footwear, most likely sneakers, sunglasses and possibly gloves, Story said.

It’s unclear whether the robber was armed.

In addition to state police, Waldo County deputies are being assisted by the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Anyone with information about the robber or the robbery is urged to call the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department at 338-2040.
