Brewer holds off Augusta in 10 innings to advance at Legion tourney

By Ernie Clark, BDN Staff

AUGUSTA – Eric White’s single to the left-center field gap with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning drove home Blake Birmingham with the winning run as Brewer stayed alive in the state American Legion baseball tournament with a wild 12-11 victory over Augusta Saturday at Morton Field.

The win means Brewer (22-6) will play Gayton Post of Lewiston (24-1) at noon Sunday, with the winner to play Augusta (20-3) in the championship game at approximately 3:30 p.m.

White’s game-winning hit capped off a three-run rally by Brewer after Augusta scored two runs in the top of the 10th to take its first lead of the game at 11-9.

Pinch-hitter Billy DeRedin led off the Brewer 10th with an infield single, then went to second on Cody Farrell’s single to right. Birmingham then dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Augusta reliever Luke Duncklee, enabling DeRedin to score.

Tyler French then popped an RBI single to center to tie the game, and one out later White lined a 1-2 pitch to the gap in left-center, and Birmingham easily scored from second base.

White finished with a double and two singles and Farrell singled three times to pace Brewer’s 16-hit attack. French and Brendan Gendreau each added two singles.

Pat McEwen, Brewer’s fifth pitcher of the game, came on in the top of the 10th to earn his second pitching win of the tournament.

Nick Lucas had four singles for Augusta, which had its 20-game winning streak ended, while Duncklee doubled and singled and Corey Clarke singled twice.

Brewer scored four runs on just one hit in the first inning, with two walks and three straight hit batsmen by Augusta starter Jake Beland contributing to the rally.

Brewer turned four double plays behind starter Evan Eldridge in the first five innings, and extended its lead to 6-0 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Augusta, which had scored 48 runs in its first three state tournament games, finally broke through in the seventh, scoring six runs on three hits – including a two-run double by Duncklee.

Brewer immediately regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning, a rally that included RBI singles by Gendreau and White.

But Augusta forced extra innings with three runs in the top of the ninth, including a two-run home run by Jason Burns – his fourth homer in the last three games. Lucas then singled and later came around to score on a throwing error after a wild pitch as Ryan Minoty struck out with what would have been the game-ending out.
