Brewer man arrested in connection with domestic assault

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — City police arrested a Brewer man late Thursday evening on a domestic violence assault charge, a Class C crime, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Friday.

Police were called to the Deer Isle Road just before midnight Thursday when the 25-year-old girlfriend of Jose Rivera, 34, dialed 911 after she and the man got into a confrontation, police said.

Rivera subsequently tried to grab the woman’s cellphone out of her hand, according to Edwards, resulting in him also being charged with obstructing the report of a crime, a Class D misdemeanor.

When officers went to the Deer Isle road residence, the suspect was gone, Edwards said, and the female victim had taken her two young children to a neighbor’s residence.

Police eventually located Rivera hiding under some bushes, and he was apprehended without further incident, Edwards said.

Edwards added its unknown if Rivera has any prior domestic assault convictions on his record.

Rivera was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remains on Friday, and no court date has been set yet.
