Police seek Rockland man who escaped pursuit in kayak

The Associated Press

WEST GARDINER, Maine — Police seeking an assault suspect who kayaked and swam away from law enforcement officers who were pursuing him.

Robert Avery Whidden, 39, of Rockland is wanted on a variety of charges.

Kennebec County Sheriff’s Capt. Daniel Davies says Whidden fled into the woods after allegedly assaulting an individual on Stetsons Way in West Gardiner on Saturday.

He then got into a kayak and paddled onto Lake Cobbossee where he was spotted by game wardens.

But as the wardens approached, Whidden got out of the kayak and swam away into an area the wardens’ boat couldn’t go.

The Kennebec Journal says Whidden left his identification behind.
