BANGOR, Maine — The Ellsworth woman accused of setting her grandmother on fire in May was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Emily A. Cole, 26, was indicted on charges of attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault.

Cole allegedly doused her grandmother with an accelerant and set her on fire at 1601 Broadway on May 13, according to Bangor police.

An arraignment date has not been set.

Cole allegedly committed the act because she was upset about a breakup with a female partner, according to court documents.

Earlier this month, Cole was transferred from the Penobscot County Jail to Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta for an evaluation to determine if, with treatment, she is competent to assist in her own defense, Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said earlier this month.

After her arrest in May, Cole had been held at the jail in Bangor unable to post $100,000 in cash as bail.

She has no criminal record, according to the State Bureau of Identification.

Ernestine Cole, 77, suffered severe burns on her upper body, police said in May. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor but later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The elderly woman, who lives on outer Broadway in Bangor, was scheduled to be released from the hospital in mid-July, Roberts said earlier this month.
