Bail search leads to drug charges against another person

BREWER, Maine — Though the person they were checking up on Wednesday wasn’t charged, two Brewer police officers ended up making an arrest anyway.

Dustin Smith, 27, whom police describe as a transient, was arrested on drug charges after Officer Amy Nickerson and Sgt. Anthony Pinette went to a local motel to conduct a bail check on a woman who was staying there.

In the room, where Smith also was staying, the officers found a steel wool pad, which sometimes is used to smoke crack. When they asked Smith if he had any drugs on his person, he said he had a hypodermic syringe loaded with Percocet he had converted into liquid form and a spoon also used for the consumption of drugs.
