SWANVILLE, Maine — Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a young man and woman who last week tried to break into a gas pump in Swanville.

Detective Jason Bosco of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said the couple drove up to a pump at Swan Lake Gas at about 3:30 a.m. Friday, July 15, and used a pry bar on it.

They caused about $3,500 in damage to the pump, Bosco said, and likely would be charged with criminal mischief and attempted theft. He said this particular gas pump accepted cash and had a cash box inside, which was their apparent target.

The gas station’s security camera shows the two and their vehicle, which appears to be a mid-’90s Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, Bosco said. The car has a white body, but a blue hood.

He estimated that both people are in their early 20s, and the videotape shows a young man who pulled a grey hooded sweatshirt on while he headed to the pump. A young blond woman was standing next to him.

If anyone has any information about either person or the two-colored car, they are asked to call Deputy Darrin Moody at 338-2040.
