ROCKLAND, Maine — A 17-year-old girl smashed her car into a Burger King restaurant early Thursday morning, and police aren’t sure of a cause.

Eliza Rainville of Rockport was driving south on Route 1 a couple minutes after midnight Thursday when her car went off the road, through a fire hydrant, over some bushes and straight into the side of Burger King, according to Rockland Police Chief Deputy Wally Tower.

Rainville was OK, but her 2005 Chevy Equinox was a total loss, he said. She also caused $2,000 in damage to the fast food restaurant and $2,000 in damage to the hydrant, which snapped.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors, Tower said. There are no charges against Rainville and the case is under investigation.

“We don’t know why” this happened, the chief deputy said. “The cause of the accident is unknown.”

A nearby witness told police Rainville just seemed to drift.
