It’s hard to get excited about socks, right?

Sure, you feign excitement, maybe oooh or ahhh when you open that Christmas present and there’s that three-pack of no-name-brand department store beauties. There’s the obligatory wearing, the inevitable ill fit and eventually the hole in the heel.

Well, here’s a pair of socks for the outdoors person that just may change the way you look at and experience something as mundane as a sock.

FITS Sock Co., knitted in Niota, Tenn., by the Crescent Sock Co. (the oldest operating hosiery mill in the U.S.) put its l knowledge of fit and comfort into these merino wool beauties. Well, beauty may not be what you think of on first glance, but once you’ve learned what’s comfortably wrapped around your foot and you take the first few steps in them, beautiful comes to mind.

While FITS manufactures a varied line of performance socks, I tried out the quarter trail performance model.

Here’s what the company has to say about its products: The socks are “constructed from two-ply, compact-spun, ultra-fine Merino Wool, providing the ultimate blend of softness and durability. Our F3 Technology delivers a unique form fit thanks to a deep heel pocket, specialized toe seam, and contoured leg — which keep FITS socks firmly in place. This means no more bunching, hot spots, or friction, regardless of the task at hand.”

At first glance, the socks in the package looked like they wouldn’t fit a cat. After slipping them on, I realized I was wrong on that assessment. They fit, well, like a good pair of socks should. The bottoms are cushioned, the uppers are vented, and the ankle band is thick, offering protection while hiking, biking or running, as well as keeping scree and rocks out.

Tryout day was a warm one while I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago. My wife, Kathy, and I had planned a hike at Petit Manan. The low-cut hikers I have are a little snug and I was apprehensive about having sore feet at day’s end. Wrong again.

The socks made all the difference.

Made in America. Real comfort. Soft merino wool (58 percent). Who could ask for anything more?
