NEWPORT, Maine — Bountiful fishing destinations, stellar civic volunteers, tranquil public parks, the tastiest pizza. Which is the best of Sebasticook Valley?

That’s a question the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce is seeking dozens or even hundreds of answers for by launching its “Best of Sebasticook Valley” initiative this week. The Chamber is hoping local residents nominate a spectrum of people, places, programs and things that it can focus future projects on.

“We want to find out what people like the most about Sebasticook Valley,” said Brenda Seekins, the Chamber’s director. “Who has the best ice cream or dessert or lobster roll or burger? Where’s the best view? We’ve always been known as a crossroads, but there’s no reason we can’t be more of a destination, too.”

The rules for nominating are loose, said Seekins. In fact, she welcomes everything from the serious to the ridiculous. Best bug repellent, anyone? Best land use ordinance? Use your imagination.

Seekins said she is unsure how the nominations will be used, other than that they will help the Chamber’s mission of boosting the area. Depending on the level of response, Seekins can envision anything from “Best of” stickers for businesses to post on their doors to a calendar that celebrates the top 12 area features. Seekins is hoping for duplicates in some categories that can be put to a public vote. Businesses, organizations and individuals are free to nominate themselves and even compile lists that span numerous categories.

“Let us promote your pride,” reads a press release from the Chamber.

Nominations can be sent to the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 464, Newport 04953, or by email to info@ourchamber.org. Nominations can also be done by phone by calling 368-4698 or by visiting the Chamber’s headquarters in the Walmart parking lot on U.S. Route 2 in Palmyra.

The Chamber is also seeking volunteers and sponsors to help with the campaign.
