Piscataquis County commissioners award contracts

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Beaver Cove town officials voted recently to contract with the Piscataquis County commissioners to use the Lily Bay transfer station in 2012 for trash disposal, commissioners learned Tuesday.

County Manager Marilyn Tourtelotte said the estimated cost for Beaver Cove to use the Lily Bay facility, maintained through the Unorganized Territory budget, is $23,000 a year.

Beaver Cove, like Shirley, Harford’s Point Township, Moosehead Junction Township and Big Moose Township, has used Greenville’s landfill over the years, but the town is closing its grandfathered dump per order of the Department of Environmental Protection.

Greenville offered the towns an opportunity to contract for use of the transfer station once it has been constructed.

The commissioners, on behalf of the townships, and Shirley town officials have not yet decided whether to continue their affiliation with Greenville.

On another matter Tuesday, a letter in connection to Sheriff John Goggin’s dwindling budget for part-time help and overtime was read by one of its authors, Maureen Doore of Dover-Foxcroft. The letter, also signed by Leilani Stites, said the county was lucky to have such a dedicated sheriff. Doore urged the commissioners and the Sheriff’s Department to work together.

The commissioners awarded a three-year contract to Gordon Construction of Sangerville for winter maintenance of 10.47 miles in Blanchard Township at an annual cost of $6,984 a mile. They also awarded Leary Soil Works of Monson a contract to do road improvements on Church Street in Blanchard Township. Leary submitted the lowest of six bids for the project.
