BROWNVILLE, Maine — A Whitefield man visiting Brownville was arrested early Monday morning and charged with burglary in connection with a break-in at The General Store & More on Sunday night.
Steven Peaslee, 18, was taken to the Piscataquis County Jail after his arrest and was released after he posted bail. He made his initial court appearance in Dover-Foxcroft District Court on Monday morning.
Police received a report at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday that a burglar alarm had been activated in the Route 11 store, according to Brownville Police Chief Nick Clukey. He said Officer Chris Gibson responded and found the front door had been kicked in.
Some people were seen in the area at about the time of the burglary, according to Clukey. Two bottles of whiskey were taken from the business and both were found intact in some bushes a short distance from the store.
Clukey said he asked for assistance from a state police K-9 team but the area was too contaminated for the dog to produce a track. Some evidence was found at the scene, including a footprint left in the dirt. Similar footprints were found up the road and police followed them to a Henderson Street residence. Clukey said Peaslee was wearing shoes that matched the footprints and he was arrested.
The Maine State Police and Milo police assisted Brownville police at the scene.
