GUILFORD, Maine — For 19 years, the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department, through the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, has been encouraging children to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs and violence.

To fund the popular program, which encourages children to think before they act and to resist peer pressure, the department has relied on dwindling school funds, donations and the annual D.A.R.E. golf tournament. The tournament raises about $2,000 annually, and organizers hope this year’s event, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at the Piscataquis County Club in Guilford, will exceed that.

Thirteen teams have already signed up for the event, which has a $35 entry free per player. D.A.R.E. graduates play for half price. Entries will be taken on the day of the event as well.

Free refreshments will be served to the participants during the event.
